            What is this indicator?

            This indicator measures the percentage of registered Santa Monica voters who vote regularly during off year City elections (years with Primary or Special State elections). Voter turnout tends to be much higher during General Municipal and National Election years. The City measures this indicator based on off year voter rates to provide a more accurate representation of regular voter participation.

            Why is it important?

            The City of Santa Monica operates to serve its residents.Strong voter participation ensures better representation of the community’s needs.

            How are we doing?

            The last off year City election took place in 2014 and showed a strong participation rate of 48%. The City needs to step up efforts to engage the community in order to meet the 2020 target for a 68% participation rate in the next off year election.

            Typically, voter turnout is higher in General Election years and highest during Presidential Election years. This trend is consistent with the voter turnout results in Santa Monica. Santa Monicans generally turnout in greater numbers than voters in Los Angeles County, California and the United States as a whole.
