What is this indicator?
Project Homecoming is a program that provides and arranges travel assistance (usually Greyhound bus tickets)for homeless individuals in Santa Monica who wish to be reunited with their friends or family in their community of origin.
Why is it important?
People come to Southern California, including the City of Santa Monica, from all over the world. Some of those who are newly arrived in the City are without financial means to return home. Through Project Homecoming, individuals who are homeless in Santa Monica are reunited with family and friends in other communities who are willing and able to offer permanent housing and ongoing support. Participants who are interested in the program connect with local service providers who confirm the participant’s housing support at the destination city and then arrange travel assistance. The service providers conduct follow up calls to ensure the participant arrived safely, and follow up again at four months to make sure the participant remains housed.
Shelter and affordable housing are in short supply in LA County. People living on the streets are at greater risk of criminal victimization and health issues, which cost communities money in increased hospital and first responder usage. Project Homecoming is a cost effective means of connecting individuals with appropriate housing and support provided by their own friends and family.
