What is this indicator?
This goal is measured by tracking the percentage of high school students who graduate from the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD). This data comes from the City of Santa Monica’s Youth Wellbeing Report Card which is produced by the Santa Monica Cradle to Career (SMC2C) Initiative.
Why is it important?
High school graduation is an indicator of lifelong success and economic opportunity. Roughly 60% of jobs require some type of training or education beyond high school and most higher education institutions require applicants to have graduated from high school. According to the U.S. Education Commission, high school graduates earn higher salaries and are less likely to depend on public assistance, have health problems, or engage in criminal activity.
How are we doing?
In 2017, the SMMUSD graduation rate was 95%, which is already beyond the 2020 target of 91%.
How can I help?
Parents, caregivers, and educators can find direct services for youth that support educational success through the SMC2C Services Finder online.
