            What is this indicator?

            The suspension rate is an indicator of school climate and engagement. The rate is calculated by dividing the number of suspensions per 100 K-12 Santa Monica students in SMMUSD schools. This data comes from the City of Santa Monica’s Youth Wellbeing Report Card which is produced by the Santa Monica Cradle to Career (smC2C) Initiative.

            Why is it important?

            Research shows that school suspensions do not improve overall school safety and are associated with lower academic performance,higher rates of dropout, failures to graduate on time, increased academic disengagement, and subsequent disciplinary problems.

            How are we doing?

            Very few students are suspended, with SMMUSD rates much lower than those for the county and state. High School has the highest rate at 5.23%.

            In 2013, the SMMUSD student suspension rate was 2.83%, down from 4.4% in 2012.
