How are we doing?
In 2013, there were 120 vehicle-bicyclist collisions in Santa Monica. This is on par with the number of collisions in 2010 and double the number of vehicle-bicyclist collisions that took place in 2003, despite an increase in bike lanes. The 2020 target is a downward trend in the number of vehicle-bicyclist collisions and all other types of collisions.
New bikeways have led to huge increases in the number of bikers: for example, Ocean Park Boulevard has seen a 95% increase in the number of bicyclists since the City added green bikeways. Since the Bike Action Plan was approved in 2011, bike lane and sharrow miles are up 122%. As of 2014,there are 82 miles of bike lanes and paths. The City aims to continue expanding this bike network annually through 2020. The number of collisions should go down as drivers become used to seeing bicyclists on the road.
The Bike Action Plan calls for green painted bike lanes, buffered bike lanes, and bike boxes to increase visibility, offer protection from the “door zone” of parked vehicles, and create a safe space for bicyclists at intersections, respectively.
