What is this indicator?

This indicator measures the number of bikes parked by valet at public events.

Why is it important?

Offering free bike valet services at public events is a convenient option that helps encourage participants to choose the more sustainable option of biking rather than driving.

How are we doing?

Bike valet participation needs improvement to meet the 2020 target of an annual increase. Participation dropped from 25,100 in 2011 to 7,514 in 2018.

The City offers bike valet services at a range of public events including Santa Monica Farmers Markets.

The City’s Bike Action Plan addresses traffic congestion and promotes active, healthy living by setting a course for creating a Santa Monica that is bike-friendly for all. It calls for both programs and facilities, and includes practical five-year implementation priorities as well as a bold20-year vision for getting more people to use bicycles for transportation. Bicycling has the fastest-growing share of employee commute trips, and many visitors come to Santa Monica specifically because they don’t need a car here. The City has been designated a “Bike Friendly Community” by the League of American Bicyclists for efforts to promote cycling in the areas of education, engineering, enforcement, encouragement, and evaluation.

How can we help?
